FRANCESCO INTORCIA
MARSALA
In 2010 Francesco Intorcia took his family-owned business, which had been founded in 1930 and which has its cellars in the very heart of Marsala, to an altogether higher level. With his father Antonio’s enthusiastic support, he decided to create a range of super premium wines. He left the choice of their first offering to the older man, who selected three vats of the 1980 vintage: Vergine, Dolce and Semisecco. Francesco also chose to concentrate future production of these craft Marsala on the best five hectares of their fifty hectare estate. The wines from the very heart of the Intorcia vineyards carry the proud name ‘HERITAGE’.
Francesco’s declared aim is to make Marsala to be drunk with food – not as some ethereal, intellectually satisfying vino da meditazione. He proved the value of this approach by giving us perhaps the most precisely focused cellar wine & food matching tasting that we have ever had (the only comparable one I can think of was years ago at Château Climens when we had a series of small dishes, accompanied by various vintages). His Marsala are aged in French and Slavonian oak, and in chestnut wood.
